Keep Your Dog Safe while in the Car with Pet Gear Auto Pet Carrier and Base

Keep Your Dog Safe while in the Car with Pet Gear Auto Pet Carrier and BaseWhat will they think of next?

This is the Pet Gear Auto Pet Carrier and Base and it works much like the infant seat that latches to a base in the car.  Works great for smaller dogs and cats heading to the vet for their visit or when you are traveling.

Your pet is put in the carrier and then latched firmly to the base secured with the seat belt. You no longer have to worry about the pet running all over the car or escaping when you are getting out of the car. I have had to catch many a pet that leaped out of the car when they arrived at the clinic because they were not in a carrier or on a leash. I have also seen  a couple of pets injured when the owners tried to close the door after putting the pet in the car, only to close the door on the pet.  Your pet is also protected somewhat, in the event of an accident.

Check out the new carrier today.

Things You Should Never Feed Your Dog

Unfortunately, there are a number of household items which we tend to take for granted that are potentially very dangerous to your dog’s health. It is especially important to be aware of this because as you know, dogs are essentially scavengers and will often eat just about anything they can sink their fangs into. I would say that may own dog is more like a mobile garbage disposal. It is also very important to be aware of these items since their sense of smell is so well developed that your pooch will be able to find what you may think is well hidden. One of these dangerous household items, it turns out, is simple chocolate. While chocolate has been reported recently to be high in human-friendly antioxidants, it appears to be potentially lethal for our pets, and particularly for our dogs. Cats are mostly unaffected since they do not care for the taste of chocolate, but dogs tend to be crazy about it. Certain breeds of dogs react indifferently to chocolate.

The root of the problem is that chocolate contains various chemicals which are called methylxanthine alkaloids(sometypes have more of these chemicals than others) Sadly, relatively miniscule amounts of these chemicals are capable of causing such serious problems as constriction of the arteries and an increased heart rate. Large amounts may cause even more dire symptoms and a pound of milk chocolate could possibly kill a sixteen pound dog. If you find that your dog has eaten chocolate then by all means take note of the it’s type and try to estimate the amount eaten. Then get on the phone with a veternarian or an emergency facility. Be sure that your children know how important it is to keep chocolate out of your dog’s reach. If you are not aware that your dog has consumed chocolate, the consequences could be severe.

If consumption is not found within 4 to 6 hours without the right treatment, cardiac failure, seizures, coma and death could result, according to veternarian Dr. Jane Bicks. In addition to seemingly innocent chocolate, there are a number of other common household items that may seem safe for our dogs but that can be downright dangerous. Some mushrooms, for example, can produce abdominal pain, liver andd kidney damage and amenia. So be aware of wild mushrooms when you are out walking your dog in wooded areas. Garlic may seem benign but can cause vomiting, liver damage, anemia and diarrhea so do not give your pet baby food since it can contain garlic. Anti-freeze can shut down your dog’s kidney and they tend to love the taste. Miscletoe can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and depression. Onions can causeliver damage, anemia and diarrhea. Onion can also sometimes be found in baby food.

Cats are actually somewhat more sensitive to this one so keep out of the reach of both. Coffee, like cocoa, is especially dangerous, and may cause heart rate increase, diarrhea, seizures, coma, death. Caffeine just does not have the same effect in dogs. When outside be careful around apple and cherry trees. While the fruit is safe, the leaves and roots are not. And be very careful about Moth Balls. it’s primary chemical naphthalene is extremely toxic to dogs and can result in tremors and seizures. Concerning dog food, you should be looking for dyes and other chemicals, according to Dr. Jane BHA, for instance, which is one of the main synthetic antioxidant preservatives used to prevent food discoloration, has been observed to cause cancer in laboratory rats at certain doses. Small doses are as yet unclear but since dog food is eaten every day caution is advised. Many conventional dog food brands have large quantities of sodium to make them palatable, and this can be quite harmful to a dog. Other ingredients to wary of are dairy, by-products, chemical preservatives and artificial colors.

Heartworm Disease Continues to Infect Dogs

Every year, veterinarians brace for a disease that has seriously affected our pets for many years. However this affliction is easily preventable using affordable and safe medications. Occurrences of Heartworms both in dogs and cats continue to escalate and the fee for treatment of (when recognized soon enough) is much more that the expense to prevent. So, how will you offer protection to your furry friend from the dangerous repercussions of this now widespread parasite?

Flash back to 150 years ago when a researcher very first detected the heartworm parasite in a dog. Then the parasite evolved and was then recognized in our cats 80 years ago. Even though heartworm prevention is available for both cats and dogs you would believe that we would experience a decrease in the number of cases, nonetheless every year hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats are diagnosed and frequently die too soon from this dreaded parasite. A number of authorities estimate that in North America alone, cases of heartworms in our pets may possibly be in the millions.

The disease attributed to this heartworm residing inside of your pet’s heart is disastrous. Your pet could be infected with the solitary bite of only one mosquito. The worm can then migrate through your pet’s body finally taking up residence in your pet’s heart chamber and the blood vessels leading to the lungs. This leads to your pet’s heart being forced to pump harder to circulate the blood through his tiny body. The consequences to the lungs is even more severe with many pets gasping for breath as the lungs fill with fluid and tiny blood clots clog the vessels. Early warning signs can include coughing and exercise intolerance that some owners just attribute to the dog being lazy. Frequently, warning signs usually do not surface until the disease is well advanced and the dog is struggling with heart failure, fluid accumulation in the lungs and abdomen which could eventually lead to death.

In cats, it only takes one heartworm to cause harm. The first signs are asthma like symptoms and oftentimes vomiting that the owners will attribute to hairballs. Once that heartworm lodges in the lungs, it can result in the sudden death of the cat.

Treatment for heartworms is costly ranging from $500 for the smaller sized dogs, to well over $1500 for the larger breeds. Complicated heartworm disease with cardiac failure is even more expensive and oftentimes there is only a 10% chance of recovery in the severely affected dogs. As of yet, there is no remedy for cat heartworm disease, just supportive care.

Amazingly, veterinarians do have a remedy to this problem. Safe, effective heartworm preventatives are available in a variety of easy to use applications. What is even more amazing is that the cost of a lifetime of prevention for most pets is significantly less that a one-time treatment for the disease. So, why do pets continue to suffer and die from such a avoidable malady?

With all internet myths, two major hypotheses think that either the heartworm medications are failing or that the parasites are developing a resistance to the medications. While conspiracy theorists love these ideas, scientific evidence for either explanation is absent. Heartworm preventives possess a failure rate of less than 1 in 1 million doses. In addition, the complex life cycle of the heartworm does not lend itself to creating a natural resistance to the medications. The truth very likely lies in the memory of the owner to dispense the dose in a monthly manner and the warmer climate.

Rising temperatures in our climate has resulted in a prolonged mosquito season and a greater chance of transmission to our pets. Here in Houston, our mosquito season is all year round. Some places are currently experiencing more mosquitoes in previously mosquito-free locations. Irrigation of dry areas and expanded plantings of trees in certain locations might actually increase mosquito population. With a bigger number of mosquitoes, there is a greater risk of transmission of heartworm disease.

When all of the facts are reviewed, the simplest reason behind our failure to manage this dangerous parasite falls on the humans themselves. We simply do not give the preventive as we really should. Perhaps it is due to forgetfulness, or maybe one partner thought the other one administered it or even it might be because of the economic conditions as well as monetary limitations imposed on the family. Regardless of the cause might be, it can bring about serious repercussions for the health of our pets.

Thankfully, as pet owners, you do have powerful allies to help fight the war against heartworms. With the help of your veterinarian, you are able to find the ideal heartworm medication for your pet and your spending budget. Oral prescription drugs, like Heartgard, Sentinel, and Iverhart can be purchased. Additionally, there are topical medications for instance Advantage-Multi and Revolution that are formulated to also provide protection to your pet from both heartworms and fleas. Proheart 6 is additionally available as a long lasting injection. The prevention of this illness rests entirely on the pet’s owners to make sure the pet receives the prevention prior to the pet is actually exposed to the parasite. That means that this prevention should get started in puppy-hood and be administered each month, all year long.
Trifexis is now available and is a chewable tablet that covers heartworms, fleas, and intestinal parasites. I now use Trifexis on my own dog.

You should not waste time looking for “natural” or organic ways to defend against heartworms; they simply just do not exist. Some people believe they can formulate ivermectin to give to their pets, but improper dilution and storage can cause overdosing or underdosing. Adhere to recommendations by your veterinarian and the American Heartworm Society (www.heartwormsociety.org). Your pet is counting on you and prevention is far better and less expensive ın comparison to the treatment.

Reasons Why Pets Are Put Up For Adoption

There are so many pets that are homeless nowadays.Eight to ten million of dogs and cats get come to shelters yearly, as pet the records of the United States Humane Society. As a matter of fact a shocking number of 4 to 5 million dogs and cats are being euthanized at these shelters. The cause? As there is not enough demand at shelters for the adoption of pets.

These figures do not include those in small, local and home-based shelters.Animal rescue orgaiztions are there too which takes care of abandoned and ill-treated animals.  There are also hundred of animals left to stray in the streets.

Due to various reasons pets end up at a shelter.  There are pets that are abused and hurt by their owners thinking that this is another form of training and discipline among their pets.  Animals victims of these extreme cased can be rescued and if the animals are not showing any behavioural problems, may be put up for adoption.

Another reason why there are so many animals in shelters is because there are more and more animals straying or roaming around.  There are guardians who let their pets roam outside their premises and never bother to look for them once they are gone.  Also these animals do not have any identification tags. Because of this it is hard to give them back to its owners.

The most common reason that an animal shelter can hear from pet parents surrendering their pets is that they are moving.  There are guardians who do not want to pay to transport their pets, guardians moving to apartments not allowing pets inside, guardians who do not want to pay a pet deposit, and many more.  It is important to remember that pets are not old pieces of furniture that can be left behind just because you can buy another one.  Pets are living things that have repaid us with loyalty and devotion.

Having a baby is another reason why pet parent give up their pets for adoption.  SPOT  (Stopping Pet Overpopulation Society, Inc), an alliance of animal lovers, dog/cats rescuers and veterinarians in Atlanta,  recommends that people have their family first then adopt a pet.  If it is not possible, then it is best to pick a breed or mixed bred that is known to be good with children.

It is important to remember before getting a pet that they require attention, time and money.  There are pet parents surrendering their pets because they can no longer provide time to take care of them.  Also others may find it too expensive to raise and take care a pet.It is essential to know that owning a pet is a commitment which you are ready to take and you become liable in this regard for the upcoming ten to fifteen years.

Behavioural problems is also another reason for giving up a pet. Too much barking, chewing everything, too hyper or aggressiveness of the pets are the common cited behavioural problems cited.  Of course, dogs who did not undergo obedience training will be rambunctious and wild.Dogs who are not too social will be aggressive in behaviour against human beings or other animals.

It is important for a parent to get a pet, only if, the parent wants it as much as the children want the animal.  Because if the children immediately lose interest on the pet, it is more likely that the unfortunate animal will be given up for adoption.  It is important to always ask yourself, a parent , before getting a pet the real reason for getting one.

There are also incidents that elderly guardians could no longer take care of their pets because of death or they would have to go to a nursing facility.  If the pet parent is already a senior citizen it is important to take into consideration the age of the pet and who will take care of it when the situation turn into worse.  If it is uncertain who will take care of the pet, it is best to adopt a pet that is already and wonderfully housebroken older dog

There are many reasons why pets are put up for adoption everyday.  It might be unfortunate events that happened to the pet parent or just avoidance of responsibility. It is essential to consider that whenever we are thinking of buying a pet, we are really ready for it and committed in caring of it.
