Dog Steps and Stairs Help Prevent Injuries

harley Dog Steps and Stairs Help Prevent InjuriesMeet Harley. Harley is just a little sad because he broke a front and back leg from jumping off his owners bed. Luckily, he is still a puppy and the fractures could be set with a splint and healed well.

Most people don’t think about their pets breaking their legs from jumping off the bed, but in same month that Harley broke his leg, I had two other puppies also break their leg from jumping of the bed, and one puppy from jumping out of her owners arms. The injuries are not just limited to the puppies, older dogs get injured, also.

In the older dogs, especially the chihuahuas, jumping from the furniture can cause undo stress on their joints, especially their knees resulting in rupturing their anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL). These injuries can’t heal with a simple splint but usually requires TPLO surgery from an orthopedic veterinary specialist.

(See previous post on ACL injuries.)

In Dachshunds, jumping from the furniture may aggravate their back and cause a ruptured or herniated disc. (See post on back injuries)

So, how can you prevent these injuries. Well, you can train the dog not to jump on the furniture, and don’t let them sleep with you or your kids. But, if you are like a lot of pet owners, the dog is where you are, you can put stairs or a ramp by the bed or furniture so your pet can get up and down without help from you. There are several to choose from and they are relatively inexpensive when compared to a bill from a veterinary surgeon.

Dachshund Dog Breed Christmas Tree Ornaments

86 X408 1 300x300 Dachshund Dog Breed Christmas Tree Ornaments The Dachshund Breed

Dog owners adore their dogs. But with Dachshunds that devotion attains new heights. The factors are not hard to understand. Dachshunds are unique in numerous ways.

Translation from the German ‘badger dog’ shows just one of the unique traits of the breed. Dachshunds were bred in the early 1600s to hunt badgers because the dachshund was feisty in his own right and could dig down the badger hole to locate the creature. That assertive and fearless attitude still remains today.

Dogs which are independent can make fantastic companions, because that also makes them playful and exploratory. It offers the dog with a lot of power along with a willingness to attempt new things. It also indicates that training them requires additional patience and skill. The breed is much more inclined than others to strive for alpha status within the household. Reminding them that the human is boss might be a lengthy struggle, but is necessary in training this breed.

Dachshunds weigh in between 10-30 lbs and are 9 inches higher in the shoulder. Toy types are just a tad bit smaller, frequently under eight lbs and only five inches higher. Their lifespan is in between 12-15 years, on average. Regular semi-annual veterinary exams, dental care, proper nutrition, and early detection screening can extend their lifespan.

With their lengthy bodies and brief legs, Dachshunds are a lot more prone to spinal issues than other breeds. Rough handling can trigger severe issues. If a disc is ruptured, surgery is indicated. I highly recommend pet insurance to cover the surgery and treatment. I seem to see the disc issues cropping up in younger and younger dogs. Surgery can reach into the several thousands of dollars. With out the surgery, the dog can become paralyzed or be in constant pain. Having ruptured a disc in my back last year and gone through the surgery myself, I am quite empathetic with these dachshunds myself.

You will find 3 fundamental types – Smooth-Coats, Wire-Coats and Long-Hairs. But the distinction goes beyond the kind of fur they sport. The personalities of the 3 types have a tendency to follow a pattern, too.

Smooth-haired Dachshunds much more frequently attach themselves to a single household member. Although they’ll tolerate other humans, they have a tendency to become stand-offish and wary of other animals. The Wire-Haired is generally much more playful and outgoing. Long-haired Doxies have a tendency to become just a little much more placid. Although, like any Dachshund, they’re up for a game of fetch whenever the chance exists.

Apart from spinal issues, Dachshunds much less frequently endure from illnesses which are much more prevalent in other breeds. Diabetes, abdominal cancers along with other illnesses are feasible but a lot much less typical in Doxies. Urinary tract issues ( this kind of as stones) can happen, but they’re much more most likely in unique types this breed such as the Double Dapples and dogs with blue eyes. These types also have a tendency to have much more eye and hearing issues, as well. The merle hair coat that causes the dappling hair coat and the blue eyes is sometimes linked to the gene that causes deafness. This can also occur in the Dalmatians,  australian shepherds, shelties, and other breeds with the blue merle coat coloring.

Raising any dog is really a challenge, if they’re to become healthy and happy. But Dachshund lovers commonly report that the rewards in their case are particularly big. Dachshunds are very affectionate and extremely loyal. The humans that reside with them have a tendency to return the favor.

Temperament of a Dachshund

Doxies are an independent breed. Dachshunds are loving. They like to play. Doxies are aggressive.

How can this be true of one dog breed? Well it is. Doxies are among the most interesting and complex breeds precisely because they encompass all these attributes and many more besides.

Bred in Germany in the late 1600s to chase vermin, fearless and bold characteristics were selected first and foremost. At the same time, they had to be strong-willed, persistent and resourceful. It does little good to have feet and legs that are excellent for digging if the dog doesn’t have the spirit of pursuit.

Those attributes have been handed down through the centuries. While most of them today are pets, not hunters, once attributes are bred in their nature does not change much. But what is simple courage in one circumstance can be considered aggression in another. What can be considered valuable persistence in one situation can be seen as willfulness in another.

Doxies are an intelligent breed. Being as they have an individualist charcter, they are more difficult to take an interest in training. But handled correctly, their smarts allow them to excel in whatever they do.

Keep in mind, too, that independence does not necessarily mean they are uninterested in others. Doxies want to take part in any adventure going on around them and are filled with curiosity. Some breeds are happy to sit by observing quietly. They want to be in the middle of things, participating along with everyone else.

There are variations within these broad outlines.

The classic-looking Smooth-Coat exhibits all the classic behaviors such as leading the pack whenever possible, barking at the least invasion to its territory and more. It will be reluctant more often to take a bath and struggle during nail clipping time.

The Wire-Hair breed looks and acts like a combination of terrier and Dachshund. Terriers, too, are high strung. They love to play and their behavior is just forthright, not necessarily aggressive.

The Long-Hair Dachshund is more like a miniature Irish Setter, though not to that extreme. Even though they enjoy a good romp, they are a little more inclined to watch and wait their turn. Even though they take a bit more grooming care, they are among the easier varieties to train.

All Dachshund variations are natural diggers. Bred to chase small game, such as badgers, into a den, Dachshunds like getting into things. Their muscular chest and powerful front legs make it pretty easy for them to do just that. Thanks to the streamlined body and smooth, narrow head, getting out is not too much more difficult. As a result, if you want to keep the garden or lawn intact, don’t allow the Dachshund to roam freely without supervision.

Doxies do need at least moderate exercise in activities where they can work off some of their natural energy. A good idea for these “gophers” is tunnels in an obstacle course.

They are also loving and loyal. The bond between a Doxie and the person or family it adopts is unusually strong. They enjoy interaction and want to be near people. As any Dachshund owner will be happy to tell you……..
