Go ahead and teach your old dog new tricks

At some point, we have all heard the saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”  But is it true?  The truth of the matter is that any dog, regardless of age, can be taught.  As dogs get older and get more set in their ways, it may take a bit more time to change them, but consistency will get the job done.

Dog expenses and planning ahead…

I read a lot lately about people having to cut back on their pet expenses or about people not having enough money to care for their pets. Many of these people cite the economy or their job situation as the reason…

I just wanted to share how I prepared for my dogs before I got them and how I prepare for their future as they grow up in the the hopes that it may help someone else thinking about getting a new puppy soon. icon smile Dog expenses and planning ahead...

Saving for the new Dog, The Doggie Budget, and the ‘Emergency Fund’.

Saving for the new Dog: This is important. If you have to borrow or use credit to buy your new dog – You can’t afford it…
I made a list of ALL the expenses for the first several months of my dogs life and saved enough money to pay for that before I ever bought the dogs. Aside of the actual cost of the dogs, I had to save for their food, crates, puppy shots and checkups at the vet, + their ear crops (Dobermans look goofy with floppy ears). Before I ever brought my girls home, I had already bought their crates and had a few months worth of food stocked up for them. I also had the money for all their normal trips to the vet set aside. A puppy is much less stressful when you plan ahead and prepare for their arrival… icon smile Dog expenses and planning ahead...

The Doggie Budget: Food, treats, toys, leashes, collars, routine trips to the vet for checkups, more treats! Raising a happy and healthy dog is not always cheap but much more easy to manage if you plan ahead and set a ‘budget’ for them each month. You do not want to spend too much on junk that they do not need and then later on discover that you have no money left for their food… Even worse would be to spend so much on junk for them that you have no money for your own food! Money is always spent more wisely when one uses a budget and plans in advance. I have several friends that live on a budget – Most of them do not include their dog or animals on their budget and they wonder why they have nothing left at the end of the month… A well done budget will include ALL expenses (even the dog) and money will be allocated so that you spend LESS than what you you bring in.

The ‘Emergency Fund’: Life happens and does not always go by the ‘budget’. The transmission in the car goes out or you get laid off from work… You can’t always plan for these unexpected events but you CAN plan for dealing with them when they arise. Part of any any good budget will be the ‘emergency fund’ and this should be the most important bill that get paid each month in MY opinion… Having a credit card for ‘emergencies’ is not so smart. In the end you will pay much more (interest!) to deal with any sudden problems that arise. I set aside $50.00 (each) per month for my dogs to have their ‘emergency fund’. I keep this in a seperate account and use this ONLY for real emergencies. This is their security for ‘just in case’ something happens to them and they need an emergency trip to the doggie doctor. Hopefully, my girls will stay healthy and as time goes by this fund will get bigger and be able to cover larger and more costly emergencies. The dog owner must decide at what level to reach with their emergency fund for the dog. (This is the hard part) A dog ‘Emergency Fund’ is fully funded when the owner has decided that that is the MOST that they would be willing to pay to fix fido in the event of a problem…

Secret dog training tip- teaching ‘back up’ for leash walking

This is another cool Dogmantics Dog Training Tip on how to teach your dog to walk next to you on a loose leash. If you are consistent with this behavior, you can actually make pressure on the leash a CUE for the dog to back up and they learn to walk on a loose leash as a default. =—- Teaching a dog to back up into the heel position on walks is helpful for many reasons. 1- If you have more than one dog on a walk sometimes it can be hard to turn around and go the other way if both dogs are ahead of you. Teaching them to back into the heel position allows you to move freely 2- If you train your dog that when he reaches the end of the leash the only way he can move forwards again is to back up, he will consciously start avoiding hitting the end of the leash. This means- No more pulling on leash. 3- This is a great impulse control exercise based on the Premack Principle. In order to move forwards you must first move backwards. —- Loose leash walking obedience without force how to train a dog without using punishment clicker training dog training walking in heel how to teach backing up on leash How to train a puppy to walk next to you . Dog Carriers Made To Take Your Dog With You

Take your dog with you in a classic dog carrier!  There are many different ways to carry your dog when you are out and about.

Dog carriers can be worn like a back pack, or they can be worn on your front so your dog can see where you are going instead of where you came from! If you prefer a carrier that is more stylish, you can carry your pet in a beautiful Red Croc Bali Bag leather tote.  This handsome bag is well ventilated and features faux fur bedding that can be taken out and washed if needed. If you are going to be flying, it is small enough to fit under the seat of the plane, so Fifi can collect air miles, too!

There are actually many beautiful travel pet carriers all designed for the comfort of your pet.  The Mediterranean Leather carrier is so stylish it could be mistaken for your purse! It has a harness strap inside to keep your pet safe while traveling. The Garden Tote is a gorgeous painted leather carrier which has mesh on both ends for good air flow and has side pockets to carry delightful delicacies for your pet!

If you just like to travel to the park, a rolling pet carrier might be just the thing for you and Fifi. Fashioned to look like a baby stroller, these nifty carriers will keep your dog safe and secure while you walk.  So go ahead, get a dog carrier and take your pet with you when you travel!

Take Fifi Down The Road In A Dog Car Seat

Ready to head down the interstate and Fifi wants to come along? A dog car seat will keep both of you safe while traveling down the road.

If you travel with your pet you know that sometimes they can be pretty hyper and maybe a bit distracting. Secure your pet in a dog car seat for her safety and your own.  We may be good drivers but there are always unexpected road hazards. We may have to suddenly step on the brakes, throwing Fifi off the seat. She could be injured, or if you would reach to catch her you might lose control of your vehicle, causing an accident and injuring yourself as well. To prevent this from happening, secure Fifi in a dog car seat; she will be content to ride along and you will have peace of mind knowing you won’t have to unexpectedly catch her if you should have to stop quickly.

Some little dogs like to be close to their owners when riding in a car. For these little tykes, there is a car seat that fits securely on the console of your car. With a leash attached to their harness or collar, this seat allows the dog to be close to you as well as see down the road.

If your pooch really likes to look out the window, consider the Outward Hound Deluxe Pet Car Booster Seat. So go ahead, take Fifi along in a dog car seat and head on down the road!
