Keep Your Dog Safe while in the Car with Pet Gear Auto Pet Carrier and Base

Keep Your Dog Safe while in the Car with Pet Gear Auto Pet Carrier and BaseWhat will they think of next?

This is the Pet Gear Auto Pet Carrier and Base and it works much like the infant seat that latches to a base in the car.  Works great for smaller dogs and cats heading to the vet for their visit or when you are traveling.

Your pet is put in the carrier and then latched firmly to the base secured with the seat belt. You no longer have to worry about the pet running all over the car or escaping when you are getting out of the car. I have had to catch many a pet that leaped out of the car when they arrived at the clinic because they were not in a carrier or on a leash. I have also seen  a couple of pets injured when the owners tried to close the door after putting the pet in the car, only to close the door on the pet.  Your pet is also protected somewhat, in the event of an accident.

Check out the new carrier today.

Wintertime Tips for your Dog

Wintertime Tips for your DogCold weather is tough on pets. The following recommendations can provide your pet with a better “quality of life” through the cold winter months months:

1)    Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date.. Increased stress associated with cold weather reduces the resistance to disease. Your pet needs more than just a Rabies vaccination. Dogs need to have DHLPP (Distemper, Adenovirus/infectious canine hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza), and Bordetella boosters every year.

PetSafe Heated Wellness Dog Bed
2)    Heartworm preventive should be given year-round. The medication kills certain immature stages of the heartworm during its journey through the body before it actually reaches the heart. The medication needs to be given all year long to insure all immature heartworms are killed when they reach the stage of susceptibility to the medication.
3)    Internal Parasite Examinations insure your pet is “worm-free”. Internal parasites drain your pet’s blood, protein, and energy.
4)    Feed high quality diet to fulfill the increased nutritional demands throughout cold weather. You get what you pay for in pet foods. “High Protein” labels do not mean it’s “digestible protein”. Pets kept outside should be fed more food to meet their requirements through the winter. Fresh water should always be obtainable. Be certain to provide UNFROZEN water at least twice daily during zero weather. Porcelain bowls will stop tongues from sticking to it. Steer clear of metal bowls for this reason. There are also heated bowls available to keep the water thawed.
5)    Vitamin supplements, such as Nutrical®,may increase your pet’s resistance to the effects of cold weather and offer required nutritional elements that frequently deteriorate once a bag of food has been opened.
6)    Brush your pet every day to maintain its haircoat.Heat in your house may dry the skin. Moisturizers , such as Dermal Soothe Anti-Itch Spray for Dogs & Cats Wintertime Tips for your Dog, are available to maintain a healthy coat.
7)    Provide adequate shelter. Supplying adequate shelter from the elements is the key to a healthy outdoor pet. The pet that has a cozy refuge where he can seek shelter from the cold wind, driving rain, sleet, and snow will be much better able to tolerate the cold temperatures. Pet shelters ought to be tightly constructed and no larger than three times the size of the pet. The doorway ought to be just big sufficient for the pet to enter and positioned away from the prevailing wind direction. Building the shelter off the ground a couple of inches and adding insulation underneath will significantly add to the pet’s comfort. Be sure all insulation is sealed away from the pet. Position the shelter where it will get the most sunlight within the winter. Cedar shavings make the best bedding. No pet should be out in zero or sub-zero weather for much more than a couple of minutes with out adequate shelter. Winter is no time to Start keeping a pet outside. Acclimatization should begin in warm weather, permitting gradual increase in hair growth as temperatures become cooler. The best thing to do for your pet is to keep them indoors.DP

Dog Dazer II – Dog Attack Deterrent

iStock 000005742607XSmall 300x200 Dog Dazer II Dog Attack DeterrentOne of my clients had to take her dog to the ER this weekend because her dog was attacked by a pit bull when they went for their evening walks. Fortunately, her dog was a larger lab and kept the pit bull from attacking her or her kids. More and more, small dogs, joggers, postal workers, delivery men and other innocent people are attacked by dogs that are loose. If you are by yourself, there are a number of steps you can take to avoid a dog attack.

  • Do not make direct eye contact with the dog, but do pay attention to the ears and tail because these are indicators if the dog feels threatened. Ears laid back or tail erect and over the back is suggestive of an aggressive approach.
  • Do not approach the dog
  • If the dog comes toward you, do not run, but stand still
  • Do Not Yell or Scream at the dog
  • Do Not attempt to pat the dog on the head, dogs perceive this as an aggressive gesture

Here are a few more suggestions:

American Veterinary Medical Association Dog Bite Prevention Tips

Dog Attacks Are A Serious Health Problem
* Dog bites requiring medical attention in the United States number 500,000 to 800,000 annually. Countless more bites go unreported and untreated.
* On average, about a dozen people died each year from dog bites.

Dog Bites Can Also Result In Criminal And Civil Liability For Pet Owners
* Over the past 15 years, more than half the states have passed laws with stiff penalties for owners of dogs who cause serious injury or death.
* The Insurance Information Institute estimates that insurance companies pay out roughly $345.5 million in dog bite liability claims.

Regardless Of Size Or Breed, All Dogs Can Bite If Provoked. Responsible Pet Ownership Is Key To Reducing The Likelihood Of A Dog Bite And Can Enhance The Owner/Dog Relationship
* There is no such thing as a bad breed of dog. All dogs can bite if provoked. Responsible dog ownership is key.
* Carefully consider your pet selection. Consult your veterinarian.
* Socialize your dog so it feels at ease around strangers and other
animals. Don’t put your dog in a position where it feels threatened and teased.
* Train your dog to respond to the basic commands.
* Keep your dog healthy. Have your dog vaccinated against rabies.
* Be alert to signs your dog is uncomfortable or feeling aggressive.

In Many Instances, A Dog Attack Is Avoidable. It Is Important To Remember To Say Calm If Approached By A Dog.
* Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.
* Be on the lookout for potentially dangerous situations.
* Teach young children to be careful around pets. Children should be taught not to approach strange dogs. They should ask permission from a dog’s owner before petting the dog.
* Never disturb a dog that’s caring for puppies, sleeping or eating.
* If a dog approaches to sniff you, stay still. In most cases, the dog will go away when it determines you are not a threat.
* If you are threatened by a dog, remain calm. Don’t scream. If you say anything, speak calmly and firmly. Avoid eye contact. Try to stay still until the dog leaves, or back away slowly until the dog is out of sight. Don’t turn and run.
* If you fall or are knocked to the ground, curl into a ball with your hands over your head and neck. Protect your face.

If you are walking your dog, make sure you have total control of your dog so that your dog does not threaten the other dog. Have your dog sit and both of you stay still and quiet. Do not approach the dog. Try to walk slowly away from the dog.

Some people have used the ultrasonic dog deterrents such as the Dog Dazer to startle the dog and make him move away. Hopefully, by following these tips, you won’t have to use it.

  • Ultrasonic technology, the Dazer II produces a discomforting but not harmful sound, audible to dogs but not to humans.
  • Help stop the approach of unwanted dogs at up to 20 feet.
  • The DAZER II works to deter animals in the 15 to 20 foot range. For best results, activate the DAZER II when you first see the dog, even at 30 feet or more. This added alert helps deter the dog.
  • the DAZER can be used in dog training for barking, jumping on people, getting a dog’s attention, etc. Activate the device followed by a verbal command such as “Be Quiet.” Remember that dogs are like children: if positive attention is not enough, they will work to to praise the dog for good behavior as well. Repeated use of the Dazer II may result in training a dog not to bark. The Dazer is great to get a dog’s attention when you don’t want to yell.
  • Made of lightweight high impact plastic, the Dazer II features a belt clip and low battery indicator

Bulldog Lover Calendars and Gifts

dec pics 080 300x225 Bulldog Lover Calendars and Gifts Bulldogs are also in the top 10 of America’s favorite dog breed according to the American Kennel Club. Despite their gruff appearance, they are really just pussycats.

Originally bred for in the British Isles for “bull baiting”, they were ferocious dogs with an insensitivity to pain. When dog fighting became illegal, breeders selectively chose the gentle disposition and eliminated the ferocious nature. Now bulldogs are wonderful family pets with a gentle dispositions. They do have a few problems due to their genetics and the large head and flat faces. First one, they almost always have to be delivered by c-section and bred with AI (artificial insemination) , which makes them very expensive to buy and breed. Bulldogs are also very prone to overheating and heat stroke and should not be left in the heat. I have also noticed a problem with demodectic mange due to their inbreeding and I have also found some that are deaf.

Love Chocolate Labrador Retrievers

temp file 194 Love Chocolate Labrador RetrieversLabrador Retrievers continue to keep their number 1 ranking as America’s favorite breed of dog according to the American Kennel Club and I must admit, they are also one of my favorite breeds.

Labs are very affectionate, loyal, intelligent, and still protective of their family and property. They have a sleek coat that has  water repellent properties and they do shed if in the house because of the light cycle of being indoors.

Because of their large size they do need a bigger place and room to romp. They love to retrieve, just about anything, and if you seem to be ignoring them, they will bring you their toy so you can play. Labs are good with children, but can run over some smaller children when excited. They are a great rough and tumble dog and an excellent hunter retriever. Their is a tendency toward hip dysplasia, but thanks to the efforts of the AKC and veterinarians, the incidence has seemed to decrease. Labs can also have problems with ear infections because of their swimming nature and the long ear canal. Labradors come in 3 shades, black, yellow and chocolate.

For more information on the Labrador Retriever, be sure to check out the AKC’s website.

These long haired jewels are Yorkshire Terriers, commonly called “Yorkies”. They have lots of personality and are very energetic. Although, AKC has them as a member of the Toy Group, they maintain the terrier nature being brave, determined and curious.

Yorkies are among the top 10 most popular dogs in America, according to the AKC. Their long, tan and blue coats are very silky and do require a lot of maintenance to keep them from getting tangled. Some owners opt for the “Teddy Bear” groom as a maintenance hair cut. They tolerate having their hair put in bows and children dressing them in clothes.
